“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.”
- Helen Keller

Hi, my name is Karin Austin.

I have worked as a Psychologist for more than 20 years, with a diverse range of people in various sectors, including community services, corporate organisations, private practice and extensively in the higher education sector.

I established Heart Space Psychology to offer an inclusive and collaborative space to assist people in moving towards improved well-being and wholeness.

In my work as a Psychologist, I offer a warm and engaging approach, deeply valuing the therapeutic relationship as core to the work of effective intervention. I seek to understand the broader context of wellbeing, working with you to connect with inner resources and strengths in addressing mental health challenges.

I work using evidence-based contextual behavioural approaches, largely within Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focussed Therapy frameworks. I offer compassion-based mindfulness training and contemplative approaches to wellbeing. Where appropriate I am able to provide EMDR as a treatment modality.

My work is informed by contemporary neurobiological models and I actively work with approaches that embrace the wisdom of the body in building somatic resourcing, promoting wellness and healing. As a qualified yoga teacher, I work with mindful movement, where helpful, to assist with achieving therapeutic goals.

Having migrated to Australia more than 20 years ago, I offer a deep understanding of the experiences of migration, cultural disorientation and the process of building belonging and connection. I am able to assist with the (often unrecognised) psychological work of settling in a new place.

I have postgraduate qualifications in Counselling Psychology and Child and Adolescent Mental Health. I am a full member of the Australian Psychological Society, a member of the Association for Contextual Behavioural Science and registered with AHPRA. I am a trainee in Hakomi Mindfulness-Centred Somatic Psychotherapy.

Medicare care rebates for eligible services are offered (at approximately 50% of the fee) where a Mental Health Treatment Plan has been prepared by your GP.
